The rental business was quite challenging. We had to learn how every piece of equipment worked, how to use it and how to fix it when it broke. And that was the easy part. The hard part was how to handle the irate contractor when something broke or even worse, you gave them the wrong tool for the job and it wasted their entire day!

As contractors, it was critical that they get equipment that worked right the first time, so we learned how to ask the right questions to ensure that we gave the customer the right tool for the job! Dad would always say “Do it right! Do it once” Every piece of equipment had to be thoroughly tested, cleaned and put back on the shelf ready for the next customer.

When I was in my late teens I was recruited by Kal Tire as a shop foreman. I was 17 and in charge of up to a dozen men (most of which were older than me) It was very challenging and I learned that if I treated everyone with respect and never asked anyone to do anything I wasn’t willing to do myself, then we got along just fine.

When I was about twenty my dad fell ill and needed me to come back to the family business. For the next ten years my brother and I looked after nearly everything. Being the boss as a kid was hard. You had to earn every bit of respect you got. You had to prove yourself knowledgeable and trustworthy time and time again. I guess this taught me that if you just never break someone’s trust you will always have it.

Stick to your word. If you say you’re going to do something, you better do it. Our dignity and other peoples respect rely on being honest. Never brake a promise and never under deliver.

My parents still own that business today, it has served that community for over thirty years.

It’s about being in business for the right reasons. We care about improving people’s lives! As a child, I always had back problems. Lifting all that equipment was hard on me. As a teenager I was always in pain and couldn’t seem to find relief. I was in so much pain at times that all I could do was curl up in a ball and become ill! It felt like someone was grabbing my spine with both hands and crushing it. It was really bad. Then my parent bought a hot tub! I was in it every day and soon my back got better!

The spasms stopped and I could function again. When I moved out on my own, I totally relapsed. I would go to visit and use their hot tub or go to the local Recreation Centre but it wasn’t enough. Six years ago when I was searching for an opportunity that would allow me to move to the Okanagan, I came across and ad for a Beachcomber dealership for sale in Salmon Arm and I loved the idea! Well at least until I researched every brand of hot tub I could find. Selling only the best hydrotherapy in the world made perfect sense, so of course I chose Jacuzzi®.

Actually there is a little more to it than that. I applied to sell Jacuzzi® and then fortunately they chose me over three other applicants because of my history with customer service!

My days are usually packed with more work than I can manage. There is a tremendous amount of detail that goes in to making sure that all customers’ expectations are met or exceeded and that all of our employees have the tools they need to meet those expectations.

We have a lot of laughs! The favorite part of my days is when one of our many great customers comes in to share their experiences. We have a truly excellent customer base. Generally our customers are very positive people that live in the Okanagan for the same reasons I do, oh and I get to help them feel less pain or connect with their loved ones on a deeper level. So, it truly feels great to be a part of that!

I want to continue to provide products and services that benefit their lives. Life is short. I want to make peoples live more enjoyable.
